How to Evaluate an Assisted Living Facility: A Family Tour Checklist

A beautiful lobby tells you very little about what daily life will be like. A useful tour looks beyond finishes and asks how the community operates when management is not standing beside you.

What to focus on

Ask for staffing patterns by shift and how call-outs are covered.
Ask exactly which services are included and which trigger additional charges.
Review the California licensing record and distinguish complaints from substantiated findings or deficiencies.
Observe residents, meals, common areas, odors, cleanliness and staff interactions.
Ask how falls, medication issues, changes in condition and family communication are handled.
Ask what circumstances can lead to discharge or transfer.

California's Department of Social Services licenses RCFEs and makes licensing reports available through its facility-search system. Families can also request to review a facility file and should understand the outcome of an investigation rather than assuming every complaint was substantiated.
